A Statement from Paul Macklin

June 30, 2009

Today, I am announcing that I will not be seeking the nomination as a candidate for the Federal Liberal Party in the riding of Northumberland Quinte-West in the next election.

Since first being elected as an M.P. in 2000 to represent this great riding, I have been very proud to serve the citizens of the communities of Northumberland Quinte-West.

It has been a privilege to meet thousands of individuals over the past decade since I began the journey of seeking public office.  I have been consistently impressed with the depth of talent of those who care for and help others that make up the fabric of so many people’s lives throughout our communities.

For me as I look back on my time as your M.P. , I am proudest of helping to bring a long-term economic development strategy to Eastern Ontario through the creation of the first fund of its kind solely for the benefit of our region which is known as the Eastern Ontario Development Fund (Program).   As an M.P. I wanted to make certain that research, innovation and technology were major building blocks to help our communities grow and thrive as now we compete in the global market place.

As I move forward, I will continue to work diligently with my local Liberal Association; with our new Leader Michael Ignatieff and our National Party to help promote liberal values; values which I have tried to live my life by; values which I strongly believe will help chart Canada’s course in the coming years.

I want to thank all those who have supported me over the years.  I have been honoured to work with so many talented, creative and compassionate people who gave so generously of themselves to support me through various elections and during my time in office.

I want to personally thank my wife Joan as my staunchest supporter who has been with me every day through the highs and lows of my life.  I would not have been able to do it without her!  Also, I want to thank my children for their unwavering support when the long hours of public duties that go with the office took me away from them.

I will continue to support my communities through my volunteer activities that have always been a source of deep importance for me. I believe in the adage “To whom much is given much is expected”.  I look forward to the next chapter in my life and all the adventures it will bring.

Sincerely

Paul Macklin
